What to Expect During an AC Repair Appointment

June 25, 2016

So, suddenly your air conditioning system needs repair at your West Palm Beach home and you have no idea what to expect. It’s stressful enough to welcome an air conditioner repair technician into your home, but then to not be sure what they’re going to do tends to add another level of anxiety. But fear not! Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning is here to inform you on the general air conditioning repair process so you’ll be prepared when an expert AC service technician needs to come out to your house.

AC Repair Starts Simple

When the repairman arrives, the first thing they should do is ask to see the thermostat. It might sound silly, but they need to take a look at it to make sure that it’s not merely a thermostat settings issue. The technician will check that the thermostat is switched to cool and then lower the temperature to see if that will start up the air conditioner. A faulty or wrongly connected wire could be all that’s keeping you from a comfortable home.

If this doesn’t resolve the trouble, the technician may ask you to see the circuit breaker box. They might set the circuit switches to off and then back to on to see if that resets the system.

Getting to the nitty-gritty of AC Repair

The technician will then likely request to see the air conditioning equipment. Like a doctor, the technician will commence their trial and error diagnosis process. There are multiple variables that could be the culprit of an A/C system that isn’t running properly, and it’s up the repairman to check all the possible sources starting from the most usual issues to the least. The diagnostic process could take anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes or more.

During the air conditioning diagnosis, they will likely check the air filter to verify it’s not clogged or in need of replacing. They will inspect your A/C system’s refrigerant levels, make sure the air condenser fan is rotating properly, verify that the size of your air conditioning system is right for the size of your home, and examine the wiring, electronics and safety controls.

Have answers, will fix

Once the AC technician has diagnosed the trouble, he should explain all your choices to you. The conversation will typically start with the service tech explaining what the problem is, what part (if any) went out, how or why it died, and how that part makes your AC operate.

The repairman will then go into your options, which will involve swapping out the part and resolving the trouble, but could also entail upgrading parts of the AC system, the AC itself, or your complete HVAC system. In particular cases, it may make more sense to buy a complete new HVAC system, especially if the AC is past its prime, or likely to break down again and end up costing you more for A/C system repairs by the time it’s all said and done. The repairman will go over how much time, effort, and cost it will take to fix the trouble.

The technician may now explain what could have been done to prevent the issue or part failure and how to keep a future issue from occurring. This typically includes proactive maintenance, which not only helps stop an AC breakdown, but in most experiences also keeps your air conditioning warranty valid. Most expert AC repair businesses will offer a yearly maintenance plan so you don’t have to think about making future heating and cooling tune-up appointments for your HVAC equipment.

Finally, they will discuss the process for repairing the failed part or resolving the issue. If you determine that air conditioning repair is better for you than investing in an AC system upgrade, the repairman will order any parts necessary and set up your next appointment to fix the A/C system. Or, if the part needed is already obtainable on their truck, they will go ahead and start the AC repair work with your approval.
