Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that gives financial support to men and women in the construction industry who endured life-altering injuries. Each year the Foundation honors various recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was thrilled to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, raised in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and received his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil experienced a massive stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the ability to use his left arm and the stroke left his left leg majorly impaired, causing foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors feared that he would most likely become confined to a wheelchair.

No longer able to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, putting financial strain on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. They became optimistic when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, an apparatus that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help a person with foot drop walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they would not be able to afford the device in addition to the intensive rehab that would be needed so he could understand how to use it.

Fortunately, an employee at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the incredible grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
